Introduction
Hydrogen Power Systems in Aotearoa New Zealand.
There have been several successful implementations of power systems using hydrogen fuel cells in Aotearoa New Zealand.
There are two types of hydrogen power system available:
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS)
This is installed between the utility power and the load to be powered and provides continuous protection to the power supply. If the grid drops out or varies in power quality the UPS takes over seamlessly and provides power for as long as the supply of hydrogen and the internal battery lasts, or until the grid power returns.
Basic Power Generator
This is connected directly to the desired load and switched on to provide power. When the hydrogen supply and internal battery charge is depleted the power supply ends.
Toyota/EODev GEH2
Toyota/EODev GEH2
Hydrogen Generator from Toyota and EODev
Toyota New Zealand promotes the hydrogen-powered GEH2 generator for worksites, events and emergency response. The unit uses Toyota PEM fuel cell technology, incorporates battery storage and is rated at 88 kW or 110 kVA. Toyota brought the first unit to New Zealand with EODev and has demonstrated it in local applications. Toyota New Zealand invites commercial enquiries.
SFC Energy through Powerbox Pacific
SFC Energy Through Powerbox Pacific
Powerbox offers SFC’s EFOY Hydrogen 2.5 PEM systems and H2Cabinet solutions for telecommunications, monitoring, emergency services and other critical loads. Modules can be combined across roughly 2.5–50 kW. Powerbox says it has supplied SFC projects in New Zealand for more than ten years. It also offers EFOY direct-methanol fuel cells, generally from tens of watts to about 2.5 kW, for long-autonomy remote and mobile use.

Hydrogen Portable Generator from Hyundai
Hyundai New Zealand has displayed a hydrogen portable generator derived from its automotive fuel cell technology. Its local site presents the system as an emerging product rather than a conventional stocked generator line, so configuration, certification and commercial terms should be verified directly.
EmPower Lite - Renewable Innovations
EmPower Lite
Hydrogen UPS from Renewable Innovations
The EmPower Lite was installed at a radio antennae site near Wellington in March 2025.
The site is one of many of the Airways New Zealand communication facilities used to manage the airspace around Aotearoa New Zealand.
This hybrid fuel cell UPS system has now replaced a diesel generator that used to be on site and is currently being enhanced to make the hydrogen fuel locally.
This unit can also be run as a standard generator but provides the best power protection when configured as an inline UPS.
Available System Scale
Available System Scale
These examples show that complete systems are available across low-kilowatt backup duty and tens-of-kilowatts mobile or stationary power. Larger installations would generally be engineered projects using multiple modules or internationally sourced equipment rather than an off-the-shelf local purchase.
